One of the most common questions women ask before starting a sew-in or wig install is how much hair they will need. The answer depends on several factors, and getting it wrong can leave you with too little hair for the look you want or too much that goes to waste. Understanding exactly how many weave bundles you need will save you time, money, and frustration on your next install.

Start With Your Desired Length

The length you want is the single biggest factor in determining how many weave bundles to buy. Shorter bundles, typically 10 to 14 inches, contain more hair by weight in each bundle. As the length increases, the same weight bundle has fewer strands because each hair is longer. This means a 22-inch set requires more bundles than a 14-inch set to achieve the same level of fullness.

Consider the Density You Want

Not everyone wants the same amount of volume. A natural, everyday look might only need two weave bundles for lengths under 18 inches. If you prefer a fuller, more glamorous style, three or even four bundles may be necessary. Think about how your natural hair looks on a good volume day, and let that guide your decision on how many weave bundles to purchase.

Match the Bundles to Your Wig or Closure

The type of base you are installing onto also affects the count. A lace frontal covers ear to ear and may require fewer weave bundles because the frontal provides a full front section. A lace closure, which is smaller, often pairs well with three bundles for a complete head. If you are sewing directly onto braids without a wig cap, the bundle count remains similar.

Account for Your Natural Hair Thickness

If your natural hair underneath is thick, you may need fewer weave bundles because your own hair adds base volume that the bundles build upon. Conversely, if your natural hair is fine or thin, you might need an extra bundle to compensate and achieve the fullness you are aiming for.

The General Rule of Thumb

For most women, here is a practical guideline on weave bundles per length range:

10 to 14 inches: 2 bundles

16 to 20 inches: 3 bundles

22 to 26 inches: 3 to 4 bundles

28 inches and above: 4 bundles or more

This assumes you are using standard 100-gram bundles. Some brands offer heavier or lighter bundles, so always check the weight before buying.

Buy Slightly More Than You Think You Need

It is always better to have an extra bundle left over than to run short halfway through the install. Most retailers sell weave bundles individually, and having a spare means you can adjust density or add length later without placing another order. Unused bundles in good condition can be saved for your next style.
